On Friday, Microsoft released to the world the first service pack for Exchange Server 2007. For many organizations, both those that have already deployed Exchange Server 2007 and those waiting to deploy, Service Pack 1 is a welcome release and brings a number of enhancements that increase the viability of…

Carnegie Mellon Gets $14.4M to Build Robo-Tank
coondoggie passed us a NetworkWorld article, this one discussing new developments in the state of robotic warfare. Carnegie Melon is now hard at work on a tank set to join its brother, the already much-discussed Unmanned Areal Vehicle, on the modern battlefield “Ultimately unmanned ground vehicles would be outfitted with anti-tank or anti-aircraft missiles and anti-personnel weapons to make them lethal. Part of the new award budget is also slated to help the university prove that autonomous ground vehicles are feasible in future combat situations.”

Native Windows PE File Loading on OSX?
ozmanjusri writes “Coders working on Wine for Mac have found that the Mac loader has gained its own undocumented ability to load and understand Windows Portable Executable (PE) files. They found PE loading capabilities in Leopard that weren’t there in Tiger. Further dissection showed that Apple is masking references to *Win* and *PE* in the dll, which means it’s not an accidental inclusion. Is Apple planning native PE execution within OSX?”

iPhone Dev Team to Open Source Free Unlock
An anonymous reader writes “In an effort to keep up with changes from Apple at a faster speed, the iPhone Dev Team is considering open sourcing AnySIM, the free unlocking solution for the iPhone. In a chat with Gizmodo, iPhone Dev Team member Sam said that this move could ‘open a lot of possibilities for the future,’ mainly in terms of the speed of the updates and avoiding sloppy and possibly dangerous binary patches. They are now looking for community input to get the project started.”

When You Blog, They Listen
You may never hear a word from a conversation analyst, but there’s a very good chance one is paying close attention to what you’re saying on blogs, in Web forums or in product reviews on sites that sell books or blenders. Somewhere, someone is reading and analyzing your words. “I pay attention to what people say online,” said Leah Jones, one of these so-called conversation analysts.

Ladies’ Night in iTunes’ Free Section
When I browse the iTunes Store looking for free stuff to write about, I usually wind up talking about stuff that, in general, appeals to guys. I am a guy, after all, so it’s easy to understand why that’s so. This week, however, I’ve made a concerted effort to find things that may appeal to women as well as men. You might say that I’m attempting to get in touch with my feminine side.

ATT Playing Hardball with Apple?
Ponca City, We Love You writes “There’s some interesting speculation from Cringley on why AT&T chief executive Randall Stephenson let drop that a new version of Apple’s iPhone will be introduced in 2008. The announcement is sure to cut into Apple’s Christmas sales and could also cost ATT a million new customers at least $1 billion in market cap for ATT, says Cringley. ‘It is no coincidence that Stephenson made his remarks in Silicon Valley, rather than in San Antonio or New York,’ says Cringley. ‘He came to the turf of his ‘partner’ and delivered a message that will hurt Apple as much as AT&T, a message that says AT&T doesn’t really need Apple despite the iPhone’s success.’ What may be troubling the relationship between AT&T and Apple is the upcoming auction for 700-MHz wireless spectrum and AT&T’s discovery that Apple may be joining Google in bidding.”
