Another trumpery in Second Life
Second life, one of the worst bandwith wastes the internet had ever seen, seems to keep itself updated with media frenzy at full pelt. The latest news from this front of nonsensicality is that some angry second life user carried out an act of vandalism by setting up nukes at “corporation buildings”. Despite heavy mockery from all around, popularity of second life never diminishes. If only the company had invested on better rendering engine and network code. However, only a year ago, nobody knew about this sham. They launched heavy p.r campaing approximately 6 months ago, even respectful sites like slashdot.org seemed to be infested with it. Instead of updating their products quality, second life producers infested the news site everyday with silly news, following one other.
No, we are not doing the same. We are not simply reporting about it. We are calling this “waste of bandwith”. We are not talking about second life, the project itself. Actually there is no such project, it is akin to another fake bonanza, like myspace, only fulfilling the desperate needs of delusional and neurotic internet users, or shall we say exploiters.
We can’t get a way with the usual “Relax dude, it’s only a game” attitude here. This is how we lose essence bit by bit in every “online application” once they go/being pushed mainstream. Like every other mainstream happening, people enjoy talking about it more than actually using it. The numbers tell. Despite millions of registered users, mostly you’ll see only thousands of users at any time. This actually removes burdens over the second life producers, since it’s network code could learn a few lesson even from ancient games like quake2.
If you really want to find out more on this “latest” event from second life, you can check here. It seems like someone is already making plans of “bringing you the news from the battle lines” in case this act of vandalism turns into a war. If you are somehow interested in creating virtual worlds, here is something you should consider, with its excellent graphics and proven network code.
At least, it feels good that we are not alone in this.
